2008 inventions

Speaking about 2008 inventions, one of the most impressive and useful ones is the invention of Brycen Spencer, an engineer student at the University of Massachusetts. The student invented a safety helmet that could become a real life-safer for thousands of outdoor sports fans who get into accidents. The invention is called Wireless Impact Guardian, or WIG in short. WIG signals for help, so it is especially useful when the wearer is unconscious.

The young inventor says his WIG gets activated when its owner buckles it on. When the helmet wearer accidentally falls and hits his head, the helmet detects that and starts beeping for about a minute. If it is not switched off, WIG asks for help, calling directly to 911 or to another service sending the emergency call to 911. Along with the message, the helmet sends a GPS location providing the geographical coordinates of the injured person, so the emergency team may immediately be sent to the accident sight.

Brycen Spencer's invention is meant to be worn by bicyclists, motorcyclists, ATV fans and others venturing into remote regions. In many accidents, victims wait a long time until emergency response crews can find them.
