Bessemer process

Henry Bessemer, born in 1813 in Charlton, Hertfordshire, England, won worldwide fame as he developed the first ever process of mass-production of steel in a low-cost way. The leading steel manufacturing technology widely used today represents an improved Bessemer technology.

Henry Bessemer made his first money selling "gold" powder that was produced from brass to be used as a paint additive. His secret formula was widely used for adorning a great part of the gilded decoration of those times. Bessemer became really rich.

In 1855, a patent was given to the Bessemer process that implied rendering cast iron malleable by introducing air into the fluid metal in order to remove carbon. Bessemer process had a lot of in common with a Chinese method of refining iron into steel that appeared back in the 2nd century BCE. The process received an original name - the "hundred refinings method" as it was fulfilled 100 times.
