Bessemer steel making process

The Bessemer steel making process entered the history as the first affordable industrial process to allow the mass-production of steel from molten pig iron. The name of the process was suggested by the name of its inventor, Henry Bessemer. The inventor received a patent on the steel making process in 1855.

Another inventor, William Kelly, discovered the same process independently in 1851. The process had been applied outside of Europe for a few centuries, but not on an industrial scale.

The Bessemer steel making process is based on the principle of removing impurities from the iron by the means of oxidation with air that is blown through the molten iron. The oxidation results in the increased temperature of the iron mass and keeps it molten.
