Huishan Dairy Holdings Limited, a large dairy products manufacturer based in the north eastern provinces in China, came up with a way of turning methane from fermented cow manure into electricity.

The company is able to transform the manure from 60,000 cows into 5.66 megawatts of power. This amount of energy is quite enough to power about 3,500 American homes.

Huishan Dairy makes use of a system that involves an anaerobic digester that turns cattle waste into gases. The latter are then exposed to iron oxide in hydrodesulfurization in order to remove corrosive hydrogen sulfide.

The outcome is a biogas that can be easily burned to generate power, reports TechnologyReview.
