Huge Amounts of Combustible Ice Discovered in China

Share

Chinese researchers found new sources of combustible ice or natural gas hydrate that can supply the whole nation with energy for 90 years. The combustible ice was discovered on the tundra of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

The found reserve is equivalent to about 35 billion tons of oil and is one of the latest sources found so far, informs English.xinhuanet.com. It is worth mentioning that combustible ice represents a frozen form of natural gas that can be discovered in frozen plateaus located high above the sea level and in marine sediments.

Scientists consider that the hydrate could be melted into methane and water before being used as an efficient source of energy. There are 164 cubic meters of natural gas in 1 cubic meter of combustible ice. In addition, with few impurities, the combustible ice can be burned with fewer emissions.
