8.2% Social Workers Took Drugs Last Month, Study Says

Study says every twelfth American employee took drugs at least once during last month.

The results are based on surveys conducted in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2007. Each survey featured answers of 42,000 social, education and constructions' workers. Every employee was paid $30 for answering the researcher's questions.

According to the study, the most drug affected were restaurant workers (17.4%) and construction workers (15.1%), whereas teachers and social workers -were least affected to drugs' consumption - 4%.

The researchers said that it was not possible to exactly determine whether drugs consumption among actively employed part of the population has raised during last 10-15 years in the USA. Similar studies from 1994 and 1997 showed 7.6% and 7.7% of social workers taking drugs, yet there were not as many people questioned.

According to Joseph Gfroerer from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, in most cases social workers confessed of smoking marijuana.

In addition the research showed that 8.8% of American social workers (10.1 million) have problems with alcohol: during the last month they have consumed at least 5 different alcoholic drinks for 5 times.
