Smell of Rotting Eggs Is as Effective as Viagra

Share

Recently scientists found that the smell of rotten eggs has the same effect as the popular drug for treating erectile dysfunction, Viagra.

It is worth mentioning that hydrogen sulphide is a smelly gas that plays an important role in human erections. When eggs rot, they discharge the gas, which is also released when people fart. According to researchers, small amounts of the stinking gas are released by the nerve cells, found in a man's penis, to get it ready for sex.

Hydrogen sulphide relaxes specific muscle cells, increasing blood flow and providing a better erection.

The discovery might help scientists create an improved version of a drug that treats erectile dysfunction. Viagra proved to be effective only to about 65 percent of men.

To test their theory, researchers from the University of Naples in Italy analyzed 8 men who underwent sex-change surgeries. The lead researcher of the study, Professor Giuseppe Cirino, said that they managed to find that hydrogen sulphide is a gas that plays a role in human penile erection, which was proved in the study.

The researcher said that the finding could help treat erectile dysfunction more effectively in the near future.

"It should be possible to develop drugs that either deliver hydrogen sulphide or control its production," said Prof. Cirino.
