Youngsters Undergo Plastic Surgery to Avoid Bullying

Share

According to Douglas McGeorge, a plastic surgeon, girls as young as 14 are willing to undergo a plastic surgery so they won't be bullied at school.

The plastic and reconstructive surgery specialist stated that bulling in schools is so bad that some parents and their children see no other option but to undergo plastic surgery.

"Children are very cruel and there's a lot of stigma attached to appearance," said Mr McGeorge, president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

The anti-bullying charities outline that bullies are the ones that need to be changed and not their victims.

The plastic surgeon said that he reshaped the nose of a 14-year-old girl who was bullied in three different schools she attended. The girl's parents approached the doctor after their last attempts to stop their daughter being bullied failed. After a while, Mr McGeorge, who also teaches cosmetic surgery, said that the girl's life has changed.

It is worth mentioning that most clinics in Great Britain refuse to perform plastic surgery on anyone under 18. However, youngsters can undergo cosmetic surgery in case they have their parents' permission.

The doctor also mentioned that he fitted expandable breast implants to several girls that were not developing at the same rate as other girls their age. The surgery was performed with the goal of preventing the girls from being bullied.

However, Michelle Elliott, director of children's charity Kidscape, expressed her concerns regarding the fact that youngsters were receiving breast implants.

"I can understand a child undergoing cosmetic surgery if there is something specifically wrong that needs correcting, regardless of the bullying, but not breast implants. That's crazy," she said.
