Largest Quake Simulator to Be Constructed in China

A week after the southwest of China suffered a fatal earthquake, representatives of the Shanghai's Tongji University mentioned that they started building the biggest earthquake simulator in the world. It will be used to analyze the designs of bridges, tunnels, subways, stadiums, as well as skyscrapers.

The device features 4 vibrating platforms with a capacity of carrying up to 200 tons. These platforms are going to simulate a quake that will test the ability of a model to resists the power that is generated when the crust of the Earth moves.

It is worth mentioning that at the moment the largest quake simulator is located at the University of Nevada in the United States. However, the quake simulator that is to be built in China is about twice the capacity of its American analogue, reported the Chinese Xinhua News Agency.

The Tongji project will be completed in two years.
