Latest Invention: Algorithm Solves Complicated Jigsaw Puzzles Extremely Fast


With the help of a new algorithm developed by Andrew Gallagher at Cornell University, puzzles that consist of almost 10,000 pieces can be solved in less than 24 hours.

The algorithm firstly analyzes the colors along the edges of each puzzle component. Then it searches for pieces with the same edge colors.

Due to the ability to deal pieces in any orientation, and because it simply pairs up high matches, the algorithm can work on several different pieces of the puzzle simultaneously.

Steadily, the pairs of puzzle pieces are assembled into larger parts and the latter come together into a finished puzzle.

It is worth mentioning that the new algorithm can solve puzzles 3 times faster than any other algorithm.

The invention could be used for other applications as well. For example, it can become an important instrument for generalized image recognition and feature identification.
