Latest Invention: Real-Time Translation System

For a long time DARPA has been working on a system that could perform real-time translation and it seems that such a system has finally been developed.

It is worth mentioning that the research agency decided to collaborate with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and recently it carried out trials of 3 different translation systems.

All of the systems involved in the experiment are part of the TRANSTAC project and at one of them relies on the already famous Google Nexus One.

The systems were used to perform real-time, spoken language translation from Pashto to English, and vice versa. Pashtu is an Indo-Iranian language that is also called Afghani. It is spoken by Pashtun people living in Afghanistan, northwestern Pakistan and by the Pashtun diaspora worldwide.

Certainly there are some particular details on the translation systems that are difficult to come by. Nevertheless, NIST is proud of its invention. Check out the video below to see the comparison of the new translation system with the one used in Star Trek.
