Latest Invention: Robot Able to Build Its Own Tools

A group of researchers at the BTH Zurich Bio-Inspired Robotics managed to come up with a robot that can build its own tools and thus complete a certain task.

Scientist gave the robot a single tool so it could make other items. Instead of providing the machine with a toolkit, they gave it only a hot glue gun. Previously researchers used HMA (Hot Melt Adhesive) to build up layers of the glue and thus create simple shapes.

They decided to equip the robot with the same skill and see if it can finish a rather simple task - move water from one location to another.

With the help of he glue gun the machine was able to fashion a small cup, then stick the cup to itself so it could transport water to another place.

However, it is worth mentioning that though the robot managed to carry out the task autonomously, the planning was made by humans. The machine is not equipped with perception hardware, which means that you have to tell it when and how to do something. In the near future researchers plan to upgrade their robot.
