Latest Invention: Robot that Can Hide from Sentries and Avoid Well Lit Areas

Share

Engineers at Lockheed Martin's Advanced Technology Laboratories at Cherry Hill, NJ are working on ninja robots that can decide when to hide from sentries.

The robots are equipped with laser scanners that help them map the surroundings in 3D and robotic ears that allow the machine to hear the footsteps. It would be interesting to note that robots can even work out which direction they're moving in.

At the moment that robot is in the development stage and according to the lead engineer Brian Satterfield it will be able to hide in known locations, doing its best to avoid sentries in unknown places, avoid situations that have no escape and avoid areas with good illumination.

Still, the robot is not intelligent enough. "There are very few fundamental limits that would prevent robots from eventually conducting extended covert missions and evading detection by humans," mentioned Satterfield. More information on the project can be found here.
