Latest Invention: System that Turns Any Surface Into a Display, and Any Objects Into a Remote Control

LightBeam is the brainchild of Germany's Technische Universitat Darmstadt. The technology makes it possible for a pico projector to transform any old surface into an interactive display and any ordinary object into a remote control.

Equipped with a depth-sensing camera, the device can show some Kinect-like capabilities. Improvised display surfaces - a piece of paper, for instance - can be easily manipulated within a restricted 3D space and the projected picture will automatically reorient, being able to turn when the user rotates the paper.

In the video below you can see how an object can be manipulated within the camera's field of vision to switch from a Flickr slideshow to a Facebook page.

The team of developers carried out a test of its system and noticed that study participants were able to interact with physical objects using the given technology rather quickly.

It would be interesting to note that the invention is expected to be presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI) 2012 that will take place in Austin, Texas, in May.
