A Tel-Aviv-based medical device company Medigus, has come up with what it claims to be the world's smallest video camera that measures only 0.039-inches (0.99 mm) in diameter.

It is worth mentioning that the new device is the second generation video camera - the first model was unveiled in 2009 and it measured 1.2 mm / 0.047 inches in diameter.

The latest invention features a dedicated 0.66x0.66 mm CMOS sensor developed by TowerJazz that captures pictures at a resolution of 45K (which is approximately 220 x 220 pixels).

Although it might look like a perfect surveillance tool, the Israel company developed the camera for medical endoscopic procedures, so it would help doctors reach difficult regions of the human body.

Made using bio-compatible components, the new video camera can be used in such fields as cardiology, bronchoscopy, gastroenterology, gynecology, and orthopedic and robotic surgery.

Soon the company plans to start supplying its camera samples to American and Japanese manufacturers, reports Gizmag.
