Snowglobe - Kinect Hack that Creates the Illusion of 3D Projection

Share

This is another Kinect hack but a very original one. The hack is the brainchild of a group of students from Queens University.

Students managed to mix a pair of Kinect sensors with a hacked 3D high-definition projector.

In addition, the team managed to successfully link their system with a hemispherical mirror installed inside of an acrylic sphere. Thus they were able to create a pseudo holographic display.

The project was called Snowglobe and it allows users to get a 360-degree view of a digital object.

At the same time it is worth mentioning that from the scientific point of view the device does not really generate a 3D projection. This is because the technology involved rotates according to the motions of the user, thus delivering the 3D illusion, reports Physorg.
