V-MODA Launches VAMP - iPhone Case with Its Own Amp

After launching its Crossfade LP headphones, V-MODA decided to offer smartphone users another option that can significantly improve sound quality. The company's latest device is called VAMP and represents a case for iPhone 4/4S with built-in amp, DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) and battery pack.

The device bypasses the internal DAC of the handset, extracting the iPhone's digital audio signal and translating it into an analog signal through its own dedicated DAC. The VAMP also uses its own 150 mW x 2 amp, which boasts 5 times the power of the iPhone's amp.

In addition, the VAMP provides 2 selectable audio modes: PURE and VQ. The former provides sound in its original form, while the latter adds a 3D soundstage, tightening the bass and increasing the treble.

Using the hi/lo gain switch, equipped with a rotary volume knob, the user is able to adjust the output level.

It would be interesting to note that the VAMP is made of aircraft-grade brushed metal that features a shock absorbing silicone shield. The latter protects the handset and cutaway around its camera.

With the help of a 2200 mAh lithium-ion battery pack, the device can provide up to 8 hours of playback. It can also play the role of a backup power source for the iPhone.

Weighting 135 grams (4.76 oz), the VAMP is available for $650.
