Man with Dead Brain Recovers

A man who was declared brain dead after an accident which occured four months ago said he feels 'pretty good'.

Zach Dunlap, a 21 year old man was injured in all-terrain vehicle crash but could not remember the accident. After the doctors Regional Healthcare System in Wichita Falls, Texas found there was no activity in the brain, he was declared dead and his organs were prepared for transplant, with the approval of his family.

The last thing he recalled after the accident happened was hearing doctors declaring him dead. 'I'm glad I couldn't get up and do what I wanted to do,' he told in the interview on NBC's Today morning show.

His father, Doug confirmed that he had the opportunity to see the results of the brain scan and that it indicated no activity or any blood flow in that area.

When his family visited him to pay him their last respect, he made his first movements. He responded to a pocketknife scraped across his foot and his hand moved when he felt pressure under a fingernail. After spending 48 days in the hospital he returned home to continue his recovery.

His mother told that finding about her son being alive was the most miraculous feeling, going from the deepest sorrow to 'the top of the mountain'. Dunlap is now feeling good, though his memory did not fully recover. It may still take about a year for the man to have a full recovery.

"Just makes me thankful, makes me thankful that they didn't give up," he told in the interview, "Only the good die young, so I didn't go."
