Most Misspelt Words in English Language Revealed


The word "definitely" is the most often misspelt word in English language. A new study carried out by the online market research company, found that "definitely" is often written by Britons as "definately".

The list continuous with the words "sacrilegious" and "indict" that are the second and third most misspelt words respectively. The study of 5,000 people found that 6 out of 10 surveyed were embarrassed to discover that they have a poor spelling skills. The research also discovered that 57 percent of people often judge others on their spelling and 42 percent declare that those people who have problems with their spelling are dumb.

A spokesperson for said: "Considering people judge others, yet don't like their intelligence to be judged by how well they spell, they should up their game and pick up a dictionary."

The words "mortgage" and "speech" did not make it into the top 20 most misspelt words list, but still 9 percent of the polled spelt "morgauge" and 7 percent spelt "speach". One of the reasons for poor spelling is text messaging and 'text speak'.

"It's clear the role technology is having on our lives is contributing to the downfall of our ability to spell. Computers and mobile phones which spell words for us have left us with a lazy attitude towards spelling," says the company's spokesperson.

The study found that 78 percent of adults said women are usually better at spelling than men.
