Secret Service Uses Facebook to Recruit New Generation Agents


Recently it was revealed that the popular social networking website Facebook serves as one of the sources for recruiting MI6 agents. The step of SIS (Secret Intelligence Service) to start advertising on Facebook is part of the external intelligence agency's campaign to recruit new agents from different backgrounds.

Previously SIS recruited agents only from elite universities

According to a Foreign Office spokeswoman, the ads were launched on the social networking site several weeks ago.

"The Secret Intelligence Service's open recruitment campaign continues to target wide pools of talent representative of British society today. A number of channels are used to promote job opportunities in the organization. Facebook is a recent example," said the spokeswoman.

She added that MI6 has its agents performing missions in foreign countries and it wants its officers to represents the society that they serve.

There are three advertisements on Facebook that pop up when users of the website contact each other. One of the ads addresses to those who have a university background. It says: "Graduates of all ages can develop long-term careers as operational officers, collecting and analyzing global intelligence."

The other ad is aimed toward people who are bored with their current jobs. It states: "Time for a career change? MI6 can use your skills. Join us as an operational officer collecting and analyzing global intelligence to protect the UK."

The third says: "A career in world events? Help influence world events, protect the UK. Operational officer roles collecting and analyzing global intelligence."

The agency started recruiting new agents openly in April of 2006. Its main sources were radio and newspapers.

The agency also placed ads on its website. Thus, those who wish to become secret agents, are required to fill out an application form that can be found on the official website of the Secret Intelligence Service: .
