Californian Hospital Witnessed Woman Giving Birth to Octuplets

Recently the staff of a Californian hospital became the witnesses of a woman who gave birth to eight babies. The name of the mother was not revealed but it is known that she is the second person in the world to deliver a set of octuplets.

Initially the team, composed of 46 people from the Kaiser Permanente Medical Centre was ready to perform Caesarian section to deliver seven babies and they were quite surprised to discover that the woman had an additional surprise for them. She gave birth to six boys and two girls.

According to Dr Karen Maples, the weight of the babies ranged between 680 grams and 1.474 kilograms. He added that all the babies and their mother are doing well. However, two newborns required help to breathe with ventilators.

All the babies were delivered in just five minutes and at first were identified by the medical staff by the letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H as they came into this world, reports Times Online.

"We decided to proceed with the delivery in anticipation of seven babies. We had done some drills, some preliminary dry runs," said Dr Maples, who had supervised the mother since her first trimester.

Hospital's officials refused to say whether the woman got pregnant after undergoing fertility treatments, which considerably increases the chances of getting pregnant with several babies.
