Piercing

According to the British Medical Journal study, one in ten people, and almost half of all younger ladies, had a body piercing, not including piercing on the earlobe. Over a quarter of people said they had complications, such as swelling, infection and bleeding. Many people did not go to specialist clinics, having pierced themselves or asked friends or relatives. It is important to know that non-specialist piercing implies the risk of getting the hepatitis infection.

Despite the ever-growing popularity of body piercing registered in recent years, the study provided the first firm figures proving the extent of the boom.

The Health Protection Agency and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine carried out a joint study. Over 10,000 people in England, being16 years old and older, participated in the study, having been asked whether they had a piercing somewhere other than the earlobe, and whether they had any complications. The study showed that about 10 per cent had some kind of body piercing. Half of those who had complications admitted the problems were serious enough to seek for medical help, and a small number even needed hospitalization.
