Latest Invention: Artificial Brain Cell from Swedish Researchers

An artificial brain cell has been created by a team of scientists from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. They claim that their latest invention could be used treat disturbing neurological diseases.

Scientists were able to pass messages within the mind just like nerve cells do, with the help of a very small piece of plastic able to transmit electricity. Our brain uses these messages to be able to control a lot of actions in the body. Thus, by being able to correct the messages whenever they go wrong could one day help treat Parkinson's disease.

With the help of their latest invention, which researchers dubbed "delivery electrode", scientists were able to control the hearing of guinea pigs. It is worth mentioning that the nerve cells in the brain discharge and use chemicals that to communicate with each other. The artificially created brain cells arte able to do the same thing, which means that soon scientists will be able to treat various neurological diseases.

The lead researcher Prof Agneta Richter-Dahlfors, said: "The ability to deliver exact doses of neurotransmitters opens completely new possibilities for correcting the signaling systems that are faulty in a number of neurological diseases."

Currently researchers look forward to create a small unit of cells that could be introduced in the body. They have already started their researches, attempting to treat hearing loss, epilepsy and Parkinson's. The study was published in the journal Nature Materials.
