Virus

About 80 per cent of young adults are infected with herpes simplex virus type 1, abbreviated as HSV-1. A cold sore is one of the major symptoms of the infection. However, in some cases the virus can result in inflammation of the brain, known as encephalitis, a serious threat for a human life, as 70 per cent of those who do not treat encephalitis die.

A research team at the National Cheng Kung University and the National Chiayi University, the Republic of China, focused at analyzing human cell lines and HSV-1-infected mice. The researchers have offered a new insight into the cellular proteins exploited by the virus to replicate itself, thus being a cause of death from encephalitis.

The study revealed that expression of a cellular protein - Egr1 - increases after a nerve cell line of a human gets infected with HSV-1. Egr1 increases the virus' replication. The researchers also registered an increased Egr1 expression in the brain of HSV-1infected mice.
